42nd CROP confirms regional coordination in support of the Pacifics 2017 priorities

Honiara, Solomon Islands: “The Pacific’s regional institutions support the region’s priorities in 2017, and are already working together on a number of key initiatives,” said the Heads of the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) agencies following their 42nd CROP meeting at the Forum Fisheries Agency headquarters in Honiara this week.

The Council reiterated its full support for the Framework for Pacific Regionalism and confirmed coordination amongst CROP’s member agencies on a number of key regional initiatives identified by Pacific Island Forum Leaders in 2016. This includes support to the Pacific’s preparation for the UN Conference on Implementing SDG 14 on Oceans in June 2017, which is co-hosted by Fiji and Sweden.

“2017 will be a ‘Pacific’ year in the international arena, with two key regional issues – climate change and oceans – to be discussed by the world,” said CROP Chair and Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Dame Meg Taylor.

“Fiji’s co-hosting of the June Oceans Summit and presidency of COP23, as well as Papua New Guinea’s hosting of APEC 2018, present real opportunities for our region to advance our agenda at these events. CROP agencies are actively working with Pacific island countries to prepare for these major international events.”

The 42nd CROP also discussed key issues relating to programming of the 11th European Development Program (EDF), a review of the CROP Charter that guides regional cooperation, coordination and collaboration, as well as regional governance and financing arrangements, which will be discussed at the 48th Pacific Islands Forum in Samoa later this year.

The Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific is a high-level platform established by Pacific Islands Forum Leaders in 1988 to improve cooperation and coordination among the various regional intergovernmental organisations in the Pacific. The Council currently comprises nine regional agencies, and is chaired by the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum.
