ICTs important for Pacific – Professor Rajesh Chandra

Information Communication Technologies (ICT) are more important for the Pacific Islands than for the others given that the Pacific Islands are scattered over larger areas and have very small economies that need to play to the larger demand at the world stage, said Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of the South Pacific (USP) Professor Rajesh Chandra during the 2016 Pacific Update Conference on 19 July 2016.

Professor Chandra presented on the ‘Role of ICT in Development’ as part of a panel discussion on ICT at the Japan-Pacific ICT Multipurpose Theatre.

World Bank Resident Representative visits USP

The South Pacific Resident Representative of World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific Region, Mr Lasse Melgaard paid a courtesy visit to The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus on 25 May 2017.

Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Derrick Armstrong welcomed Mr Melgaard and provided an overview of the University.

Professor Armstrong informed Mr Melgaard that USP is an inter-governmental body in terms of the ownership structure of the University, reiterating its importance particularly in the area of human resource development.

He also stated that in the area of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), USP is the CROP agency leader in ICT development in the region. Professor Armstrong added that ICT at the University is a major independent resource in connecting to all of its campuses throughout USPNet for teaching and learning.

VC delivers public lecture on Pacific Regionalism and Higher Education

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rajesh Chandra delivered a public lecture on ‘Pacific Regionalism and Higher Education’ at the Development Policy Centre, Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra on 8 March 2016.

The lecture was organised by the Development Policy Centre at Crawford School of Public Policy in partnership with the ANU Pacific Institute and The State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Programme, ANU College of Asia & the Pacific.

Professor Stephen Howes the Director, Development Policy Centre, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, warmly welcomed guests to this event and said it was an honour to host the Vice-Chancellor of USP for this presentation.

USP facilitates 3rd Forum ICT Ministers meeting

The third Forum ICT Ministers meeting, facilitated by The University of the South Pacific, (USP) was held at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre in Nuku’alofa on 19 June 2015.

The meeting was opened by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala and attended by ministers from Tonga, Niue, Samoa and Solomon Islands, and official delegates from 13 countries, members of the CROP ICT Working Group and observers from 11 organisations.

In welcoming delegates, Professor Chandra said, “it was a privilege to be given the pleasant task of welcoming you all to this auspicious event”.
